WRC is looking to fill many positions for the 2008-2009 Americorps/VISTA year! If you enjoy working with elementary-aged students, and are motivated to make a difference in a child's life, please contact us to schedule an interview ASAP! These positions are full-time service positions equaling 40 hours a week. Through the Washington Reading Corps of Seattle and South King County, AmeriCorps and VISTA members are placed in low-income schools in and around Seattle, Washington. We specifically work with schools in the Seattle, Tukwila, Burien, Kent and Highline School Districts. AmeriCorps and VISTA members tutor struggling readers, coordinate community volunteer tutoring programs, and plan family literacy events. As a member, you tutor students one-on-one and/or in small groups of up to four students. Additionally, AmeriCorps members assist with program development activities; including helping to set up a peer tutoring program, a community volunteer program and planning and implementing family literacy events and activities. AmeriCorps members attend regular team meetings where they receive further professional development trainings, and participate in Civic Engagement and community service project activities. As an AmeriCorps or AmeriCorps VISTA member, you would commit to one year of full-time service. In exchange, you would receive: • A living allowance of $925.00 per month, medical benefits, monthly bus tickets, and childcare assistance (if income eligible). • Education award or stipend. After successful completion of service, AmeriCorps members receive an education award of $4,725. VISTAs receive an educational award of $4,725 OR a $1200 cash stipend. Additionally, members can defer their student loans during their service. Contact your lender for more specific information or to confirm your loan status during AmeriCorps or VISTA service. • Training, including workshops on issues of interest to the community and leadership and skills development for the non-profit sector. • Experience! National service members gain great job skills and a strong network of contacts among schools and social service agencies in the area. Compensation: $925-$949 Monthly Stipend
